Photocatalysis of tin(II)-coordinated iridium complexes for energy storing with quantum yield higher than unity in 2-propanol dehydrogenation

A remarkable photoenhancement of catalytic activity was observed for the dehydrogenation of 2-propanol with tin(II)-coordinated iridium complexes. The stable composition of the catalyst solution under photoirradiated conditions consisted of both trans-[IrCl2(SnCl3)4]3- and [IrH(SnCl3)5]3-. A quantum yield higher than unity (3.28 at 254 nm) at room temperature indicates that the active species is formed by ligand photodissociation outside the catalytic cycle. The usefulness of photocatalytic 2-propanol dehydrogenation for chemical conversion and energy storage is discussed in connection with a photocatalyst-assisted chemical heat pump.
