    Paramagnetic, amphiphilic, biocompatible polymers were prepared comprising a carbonate repeat unit bearing a paramagnetic organic radical, more specifically a nitroxyl radical. The radical polymers can be produced in one step from a precursor polymer bearing an active ester side chain by treating the precursor polymer with a radical-bearing nucleophile. The precursor polymer can be prepared by organocatalyzed catalyzed ring opening polymerization (ROP) of a cyclic carbonate monomer bearing an active ester side chain. The radical polymers can be non-toxic and partially biodegradable. The radical polymers have utility as contrast enhancing agents in a medical imaging application and/or as therapeutic agents for treating a medical condition. The radical polymers can also serve as carriers for therapeutic agents (e.g., drugs) and/or medical image enhancing agents (e.g., NIRF dyes).

    A method is disclosed for preventing the polymerization of (meth)acrylic acid and esters thereof, which method is characterized by using an N-nitrosophenyl hydroxyl amine or a salt thereof, an N-oxyl compound, an N-hydroxy-2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine compound, and a 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine compound in combination in a purifying column. The N-nitrosophenylhydroxylamine or the salt thereof is partly decomposed in the purifying column and is allowed to ascend the interior of the column and effectively inhibit the polymerization of (meth)acrylic acid. Since the method does not need to use any metal compound, it permits the disposal of the waste liquid to be effected easily. Further, the combined use of the relevant components ensures effective prevention of the polymerization in the gas and the liquid phase.

    A graft copolymer having a structure in which a vinyl copolymer segment formed from a vinyl monomer having an acid is suspended in a molecular chain of a polyolefin resin segment via a β-substituted propylene group is obtained, by reaction of polyolefin resin having β-substituted propenyl group as a pendant and a vinyl monomer having an acid, and further a graft copolymer composition containing the same and a molded product thereof are obtained. The obtained graft copolymer, the composition containing the same and the molded product thereof are excellent in adhesive property to a polar material and scratch resistance.
