The reactions of NW(OtBu)3 with the low-coordinate phosphorus compounds (Me3Si)2NP(NSiMe3)2 (I) and (Me3Si)2NPS(NtBu) (II) were studied. Quantum chemical calculations were used to determine why Mo- and W-containing compounds with the same composition have different molecular structures.

The low-coordinate phosphorus compounds (Me3Si)2N–PNSiMe3, (Me3Si)2N–P(S)NtBu and (Me3Si)2N–P(NSiMe3)2 react with (iPrO)3MM(OiPr)3 (M = Mo, W) to form four- and five-membered metallacycles with intact endocyclic or exocyclic MM triple bonds. The first four-membered planar metallacycles, containing an MM triple bond were obtained in reaction with (Me3Si)2N–PNSiMe3.
