The decomposition, either thermal or under H2, of [O(AuIPR3)3](CF3SO3) (R = Ph 1, R = Me 2) in organic solvents has been studied by 31P1H} NMR, UV–vis spectroscopy and TEM; during the reaction, the phosphine acts as an efficient oxygen trap and gold nanoparticles are produced which may be stabilized by PVP in acetonitrile (mean diameter 4.5 nm) or oleylamine in toluene (mean diameter 9 nm).
