X-ray study of Hg2Cl2Br2 and HgCl2HgBr2 reactions in solid state

The reactions (I) Hg2Cl2(s) + Br2(g) and (II) HgCl2(s) + HgBr2(s) have been investigated by an X-ray method. Both the reactions yield two forms of the mixed halide HgClBr, designated as α-HgClBr and β-HgClBr. The cell parameters of the two are as follows:

The reactionbetweenCuI and HgClBr in the solidstate has been studied by resistivitymeasurements, X-ray diffraction, and chemical analysis. The reaction occurs differently at different molar ratios. The kinetics of the reaction has been studied by a visual technique. The reaction follows the usual rate law, Xπ = kt. The k's show the Arrhenius dependence. The activation energy, 43.30 ± 0.53 kJ/mol
A structural model for the description of transition metal phosphides has been applied to the determination of the structural relation between M12P7 and M2P hexagonal phases. The correctness of this approach has been tested by the prediction of the substitutional ordering in M12P7phases.
