    An optical recording material for binary, multibit or volume data storage is described. The optical recording material comprises: (a) at least one dyestuff selected from polymeric azo dyestuffs and oligomeric azo dyestuffs, the dyestuff changing its spatial arrangement upon irradiation with polarized electromagnetic radiation; and (b) optionally at least one grouping having form anisotropy. The optical recording material has the following characteristics: (i) the absorption maximum of the dyestuff(s) is at least 30 nm less than 400 nm and/or at least 30 nm greater than 400 nm; (ii) at 400 nm the dyestuff reaches an optical density of not more than 60% of its absorption maximum; (iii) the optical recording material has the capacity for being rewritten on by changing the state of polarization of actinic light, an intensity of at least 80% of the original value being achieved after a deletion/rewriting cycle; and (iv) at 400 nm, under identical conditions, an optical writing operation performed upon the optical recording material proceeds no more slowly than at 500 nm, and birefringence values induced during the optical writing operation do not differ from those birefringence values induced at 500 nm by more than 10%.

    A crystal of carboxyl acid and at least one compound selected from the group consisting of amine and ammonia are mixed in an absence of a liquid medium. The carboxyl acid is conjugated diene such as (Z,Z)-muconic acid, the conjugated diene including a carboxyl group. The at least one nitrogen-containing compound selected from the group consisting of amine and ammonia is primary amine represented by RCH 2 NH 2 , where R is an aryl group, or is a normal alkyl group that contains five or more carbon atoms. Moreover, such amine that is a bivalent group and that is represented by —Ar—N═N—Ar′—, where Ar and Ar′ are independently aromatic hydrocarbon bivalent groups, is intercalated in a layered crystal of a polymer such as polymuconic acid, the layered crystal including a carboxyl group. In this way, a novel photoresponsive polymer is obtained. Also obtained is a crystal of ammonium carboxylate including at least one kind of carboxyl acid and at least one kind of amine, at least one kind of compound selected from (i) the at least one kind of carboxyl acid and (ii) the at least one kind of amine being a diacetylene derivative. The crystal of ammonium carboxylate is subjected to light or heat, to obtain a built-up type diacetylene polymer.

    A dye formulation is disclosed that includes a vegetable oil ester based solvents that have carbon chain lengths of C-1 to C-18, a solvent dye that is a true liquid dye dissolved in the vegetable oil ester for imparting color to the dye formulation, and reduced sulfur levels in commercially available dye formulations as compared to those in hydrocarbon based solvent systems. Sulfur content is typically reduced to 2-3 percent of dye formulations in hydrocarbon based solvents. The formulations are particularly useful for tagging petroleum substrates as well as writing instrument and ink jet formulations.

    Numerous 3-substituted-6-(3-ethyl-4-methylanilino)uracils (EMAU) have been synthesized and screened for their capacity to inhibit the replication-specific bacterial DNA polymerase IIIC (pol IIIC) and the growth of Gram+ bacteria in culture. Direct alkylation of 2-methoxy-6-amino-4-pyrimidone produced the N3-substituted derivatives, which were separated from the byproduct 4-alkoxy analogues. The N3-substituted derivatives were heated with a mixture of 3-ethyl-4-methylaniline and its hydrochloride to effect displacement of the 6-amino group and simultaneous demethylation of the 2-methoxy group to yield target compounds in good yields. Certain intermediates, e.g. the 3-(iodoalkyl) compounds, were converted to a variety of (3-substituted-alkyl)-EMAUs by displacement. Most compounds were potent competitive inhibitors of pol IIIC (K(i)s 0.02-0.5 mu M), and those with neutral, moderately polar 3-substituents had potent antibacterial activity against Gram+ organisms in culture (MICs 0.125-10 mu g/mL). Several compounds protected mice from lethal intraperitoneal (ip) infections with S. aureus (Smith) when given by the ip route. A water soluble derivative, 3-(4-morpholinylbutyl)-EMAU hydrochloride, given subcutaneously, prolonged the life of infected mice in a dose dependent manner.
