    Imidazolines substituted in the 2-position are obtained by condensing N : N1-ethyleneurea, or an N : N1-ethyleneurea substituted at a carbon atom by a hydrocarbon radicle, with a monocarboxylic acid other than formic acid, the reaction occurring with elimination of water and carbon dioxide. In a typical example, N : N1-ethyleneurea and oleic acid, heated to 280-300 DEG C., yield 2-heptadecenyl-imidazoline. Examples are given also of the manufacture of imidazolines from N : N1-ethyleneurea and stearic acid, palmitic acid, benzoic acid, butyric acid, a - and b -naphthoic acids, diphenyl-4-carboxylic acid, carbazole-2-carboxylic acid, and an acid (molecular weight 238) obtained by the oxidation of paraffin. In a further example, N : N1-propylene urea is heated with benzoic acid to yield a mixture of 4- and 5-methyl-2-phenylimidazolines. Carbazole-2-carboxylic acid is obtainable by fusing 2-chloracetyl-N-acetylcarbazole with caustic potash.

    A compound useful as a catalyst activator corresponding to the formula: (A* +a ) b (Z*J* j ) −c d , wherein: A* is a cation of charge +a, Z* is an anion group of from 1 to 50 atoms not counting hydrogen atoms, further containing two or more Lewis base sites; J* independently each occurrence is a Lewis acid coordinated to at least one Lewis base site of Z*, and optionally two or more such J* groups may be joined together in a moiety having multiple Lewis acidic functionality, j is a number from 2 to 12 and a, b, c, and d are integers from 1 to 3, with the proviso that a×b is equal to c×d.

    This invention relates to oil soluble, nitrogen containing sulfonated polymers useful as additives for lubricating oil and fuel oil, which are effective as dispersants and viscosity modifiers. The polymeric dispersant additives are ionic polymers which comprise a back-bone substantially soluble in the fuel or lubricant, and pendant ionic groups which are sulfonic acid groups which may be neutralized with an ammonium cation or an amine. Polymeric dispersant additives of this type may be made which are particularly useful in crankcase lubricating oils for imparting viscosity improvement, varnish inhibition, oxidation inhibition and detergency to the lubricant. These additives may also impart rust preventive properties to the oil or fuel, and as V.I. improvers they can be formed to have particularly good low temperature viscosity effects in lubricating oil.

    Hydrocarbon polymers such as ethylene copolymers may be reacted with unsaturated nitrogen-containing monomers or unsaturated carboxylic acids in the presence of a free radical catalyst such as a peroxide or azo free radical initiator and a chain stopping agent, e.g. a mercaptan to inhibit excessive cross-linking and branching. The copolymer grafted directly with the nitrogen-containing monomers may be utilized as an additive for oil and fuel compositions, particularly lubricating oil compositions as a V.I.-dispersant additive. The polymer reacted with carboxylic acid may be further reacted with amines, polyols, amino-alcohols, etc. to also form a V.L-dispersant additive.

    Hydrocarbyl substituted C4 to C10 monounsaturated dicerboxylic acid, anhydrides or esters, e.g. polyisobutenyl succinic anhydride, preferably made by reacting polymer of C2 to C10 monoolefin, preferably polyisobutylene, having a molecular weight of about 1500 to 5,000, preferably with a C4 to C10 monounsaturated acid, anhydride or ester, preferably maleic anhydride, such that there are 1.05 to 1.25 dicarboxylic acid producing moieties per molecule of said olefin polymer used in the reaction mixture. The resulting materials are useful per se as oil additives, or may be further reacted with amines, alcohols, amino alcohols, boric acid, etc. to form dispersants.
