We synthesized two types of liquid crystalline nano-layers covalently bonded to Si and Si/SiO2 wafers. Monolayers of terminal and lateral low molecular weight mesogens exhibit spontaneous homeotropic orientation, while planar orientation is obtained by means of rubbing process.
