  A new heterotrinuclear complex, [NiCr2(bipy)(2)(C2O4)(4)(H2O)(2)]. H2O, has been synthesized by self-assembling [Cr(bipy)(C2O4)(2)](-) building blocks with Ni(II) ions. The synthesis way consists of the reaction of a barium(II) precursor, [BaCr2(bipy)(2)(C2O4)(4)(H2O)]. H2O, with nickel(II) sulfate. Variable-temperature magnetic susceptibility measurements indicate an antiferromagnetic coupling between Ni(II) and Cr(III) ions (J = -0.6 cm(-1), D-Ni = 0.4 cm(-1), H = -J(SCr1SNi + SCr2SNi) + SNiDNiSNi).   A catalyst composition is manufactured by admixing a hydrocarbyl aluminum halide of a nickel compound of the formula (R.sub.1 COO)(R.sub.2 COO)Ni, where R.sub.1 is hydrocarbyl with at least 5 carbon atoms and R.sub.2 is haloalkyl of 1-3 carbon atoms. Olefins such as ethylene, propylene and butenes can be oligomerized, for example, dimerized and trimerized, with the above catalyst composition.

  Nickel compounds of the formula (R.sub.1 COO) (R.sub.2 COO) Ni, where R.sub.1 is hydrocarbyl of at least 5 carbon atoms and R.sub.2 is haloalkyl of 1-3 carbon atoms, are manufactured from the corresponding acids R.sub.1 COOH and R.sub.2 COOH or salts thereof. The resultant nickel compounds are soluble in hydrocarbons and can be used in admixture with organoaluminum compounds as constituents of catalytic compositions; olefins can be oligomerized, for example, dimerized and trimerized, therewith.
