Carbon dioxide has been reduced at the Everitt's salt (ES)-mediated electrode in the presence of 1,2-dihydroxybenzene-3,5-disulphonato (tiron) ferrate(III) complex and ethanol. The formation of methanol was confirmed by steam chromatography, and the IR spectra of the metal complex showed the existence of Fe(III)-tiron-ethyl formate as an intermediate.
