    Shaped, preferably porous, inorganic bodies are provided which are prepared from a reactive blend. In accordance with one preferred embodiment, the solution is absorbed into a porous sacrificial substrate such as a cellulose sponge. The solution-saturated substrate is heated and an oxidation-reduction reaction occurs thereby forming an inorganic solid. A shaped, inorganic body is formed in situ. Optional, but preferred additional thermal treatment of the shaped, inorganic body removes the organic substrate, leaving an inorganic body that faithfully mimics the porosity, shape, and other physical characteristics of the organic substrate. Inorganic substrates may also be used to good effect. Large varieties of shaped bodies can be prepared in accordance with other embodiments of the invention and such shapes find wide use in surgery, laboratory and industrial processes and otherwise. The invention also provides chemically and morphologically uniform powders, including those having uniformly small sizes.

    The present invention is directed to a synthetic biomaterial compound based on stabilized calcium phosphates and more particularly to the molecular, structural and physical characterization of this compound. The compound comprises calcium, oxygen and phosphorous, wherein at least one of the elements is substituted with an element having an ionic radius of approximately 0.1 to 1.1 Å. The knowledge of the specific molecular and chemical properties of the compound allows for the development of several uses of the compound in various bone-related clinical conditions.

(I), wherein x and y are the respective number of charges and m and n are each a number 1, 2, 3 or 4, Me is a metal atom and R is the radical of an alcohol, phenol or thiophenol or of a carboxylic acid or thiocarboxylic acid, or 10 to 90% by weight of a salt of formula II [Me.sub.1 ].sub.m.sup.x.sym. [A].sub.n.sup.y.crclbar. (II), with an organic complex former containing one or more hetero atoms having free electron pairs, wherein Me.sub.1 is a metal atom or a group of the formula N(R.sub.1).sub.4, S(R.sub.1).sub.3 or P(R.sub.1).sub.4 wherein each R.sub.1 independently of the others is hydrogen, an unsubstituted or substituted C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 alkyl or aryl radical, A is any anion and x, y, m and n are as defined above, and b) 90 to 10% by weight of an organic solvent containing at least one --OH, --OR.sub.1, --COOH, --COOR.sub.1, --COR.sub.1 or --CON(R.sub.1).sub.2 group wherein R.sub.1 is hydrogen, an unsubstituted or substituted C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 alkyl or aryl radical, are storage-stable with respect to temperature and time and do not precipitate, and the use thereof, for example for accelerating the hardening of epoxy resin/amine combinations, the drying times being in the range of about 15 to 40 minutes.

    Process for conditioning metal surfaces to inhibit their corrosion and/or to inhibit scale deposition thereon by treating said surfaces: A. prior to contact with a corrosive or scaling environment, with (i) compound having the formula I: ##STR1## or a water-soluble salt (or partial ester or -salt) thereof, wherein R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 are the same or different and each is hydrogen, a C.sub.1 -C.sub.12 straight- or branched chain alkyl group (optionally substituted by one or more hydroxy- and/or carboxyl groups and/or optionally interrupted by one or more oxygen atoms), a C.sub.3 -C.sub.12 straight- or branched chain alkenyl group, a C.sub.7 -C.sub.15 aralkyl group or --CH.sub.2 PO.sub.3 H.sub.2, or R.sub.1 and R.sub.2, together with the nitrogen atom to which they are each bonded, may form an optionally-substituted heterocyclic ring; R.sub.3 is hydrogen, a C.sub.1 -C.sub.12 straight- or branched chain alkyl group or an optionally substituted C.sub.6 -C.sub.10 aryl group; and R.sub.4 is hydrogen or C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl; and (ii) optionally a metal ion component (b) as hereinafter defined; and/or B. during contact with an aqueous system capable of corroding a metal surface or of depositing scale thereon, with (a) a compound of formula I or a water-soluble salt (or partial salt) thereof; and optionally (b) a metal ion which enhances, synergistically, the metal conditioning effected, individually, by the compound of formula I and the metal ion.
