wherein R1 is hydroxy, amino or halogen; and R2 and R3 are independently selected from hydrogen and a phosphate group having the formula:

or a pyrophosphate group having the formula:
wherein R4 and R5 are independently selected from hydrogen, a pharmaceutically acceptable cation, alkyl having 1 to 6 carbon atoms, phenyl, phenylalkyl wherein the alkyl moiety has 1 to 6 carbon atoms, phosphate or pyrophosphate are disclosed. The compounds have antiviral activity. They are particularly effective against herpes viruses; e.g. herpes simplex virus.
