    The growth of biofilm present in open recirculating water systems is inhibited by introducing into the water comprising such a water system (a) a source of free halogen, e.g. e chlorine and (b) a source of di(lower alkyl) substituted-2-oxazolidinone, the mole ratio of (a) to (b) and the combined amount of (a) and (b) being sufficient to at least inhibit the growth of the biofilm, e.g., the bacteria comprising the biofilm, the source of free available halogen being present in less than biostatic amounts.

    A method of manufacturing a solid cast detergent composition comprising the steps of introducing a solid particulate detergent-component into a mold wherein the particulate defines an interstitial void volume; intro­ducing into the mold, in the absence of substantial agitation, an effective interstitial void volume oc­cupying amount of an aqueous solution of a hydratable alkaline chemical; allowing the aqueous solution to percolate the detergent-component particles; and solidi­fying the aqueous solution. The preferred detergent-­component is a condensed phosphate and the preferred alkaline-chemical is sodium hydroxide.

    The application is directed to an automatic dishwasher detergent powder composition containing a dual bleach system. The composition contains a chlorine bleach source and a bromide compound. In the wash bath the chlorine source reacts with water to form hypochlorite and the bromide compound reacts with a portion of the hypochlorite to form hypobromite. The active ingredients of the dual bleach system are the hypochlorite and hypobromite which provide improved cleaning performance against both proteinaceous and starchy carbohydrate soils. The powder compositions are dry, free flowing, readily dispersed and easily soluble in the wash bath.

    A machine dishwashing composition is provided wherein two specifically defined nonionic surfactants are utilized which in combination have been shown through empirical research to surprisingly yield improved results. One of the nonionic surfactants is an alcohol alkoxylate (as defined) and the other nonionic surfactant is a block copolymer of ethylene oxide and propylene oxide (as defined). The use temperature for efficient cleaning while using the composition extends over a broad range up to at least 140°F. in the absence of deleterious foaming even in the presence of protein soil (e.g., egg and/or milk soil). Further, an aqueous rinse-aid composition for kitchen utensils is provided wherein an anionic hydrotrope and a blend of two specifically defined nonionic surfactants are utilized which has been shown through empirical research to surprisingly yield improved results. One of the nonionic surfactants is an alcohol alkoxylate (as defined) and the other nonionic surfactant is a block copolymer of ethylene oxide and propylene oxide (as defined). The composition is suitable for use at a temperature of up to at least 180°F. in the absence of excessive foaming, spotting and film formation. The components of the composition exhibit good compatibility during storage even if elevated temperatures are experienced thereby maintaining reliable performance upon usage. Rapid high velocity rinsing at a high temperature is made possible in the absence of deleterious foam generation to yield dishes and tableware that can be readily dried without the need for the time consuming hand removal of deleterious spots and/or film.
