A general method of ene-lactam preparation is described. Ene-lactams can be prepared efficiently from keto-containing N-2,4-dimethoxylbenzylamides in good to excellent yields. This method is applicable for the preparation of substituted delta-, gamma-. and epsilon-ene-lactams and bicyclic ene-lactams.

Copper-catalyzedintramolecular vinylation of iodoenamides were investigated for the first time. With CuI as the catalyst and N,N'-dimethylethylenediamine as the ligand, a number of iodoenamides underwent cyclization in dioxane leading to the formations of five- to seven-membered lactams in moderate to excellent yields.
