Abstract Matthias and coworkers proposed that the enhancement of Tc in the IrY system and the coincident lattice softening is due to a eutectic between Ir and YIr2. Here we report the existence of the rhombohedral phase YIr3, which has a Tc of 3.3 ± 0.3K and a Debye temperature of 222 ± 15K, and propose that this new phase is responsible for the properties reported by Matthias et al.
