    Provided is a polarizing film showing high dichroism. A polarizing film comprising a substrate, and a photo alignment film and a light absorption anisotropic film laminated on the substrate in this order, wherein the light absorption anisotropic film has a content ratio of 30% by mass or less of a liquid crystalline non-colorable low molecular weight compound and is obtained by fixing the alignment of a dichroic dye composition comprising at least one nematic liquid crystalline azo dichroic dye; in X-ray diffraction measurement thereof, diffraction peaks derived from periodic structure along a vertical direction to the alignment axis are present, the period indicated by at least one of the diffraction peaks is 3.0 to 15.0Å and an intensity of the diffraction peak does not show a maximum value in the range of ±70° of the film normal line direction in a plane vertical to the alignment axis.

    A main object of the present invention is to provide a liquid crystal display using a ferroelectric liquid crystal, with the ferroelectric liquid crystal in the mono-stability state and the excellent alignment stability. To achieve the above-mentioned object, the present invention provides a liquid crystal display comprising: a reactive liquid crystal side substrate having a first substrate, an electrode layer formed on the first substrate, a first alignment layer formed on the electrode layer, and a reactive liquid crystal layer with a reactive liquid crystal fixed and formed on the first alignment layer; and a counter substrate having a second substrate, an electrode layer formed on the second substrate, and a second alignment layer formed on the electrode layer, wherein the reactive liquid crystal layer of the reactive liquid crystal side substrate and the second alignment layer of the counter substrate are disposed to face each other such that a liquid crystal layer including a ferroelectric liquid crystal and a polymerized product of a polymerizable monomer is sandwiched between the reactive liquid crystal side substrate and the counter substrate.

    A liquid crystal display using a ferroelectric liquid crystal, which can give mono-domain alignment of the ferroelectric liquid crystal without forming alignment defects such as zigzag defects, hairpin defects and double domains and which is so remarkably good in alignment stability that the alignment thereof can be maintained even if the temperature of the liquid crystal is raised to the phase transition point or higher. The liquid crystal display has a ferroelectric liquid crystal sandwiched between two substrates, wherein an electrode and a photo alignment layer are each successively formed on opposite faces of the two substrates facing each other, and a constituent material of the respective photo alignment layer has a different composition with the ferroelectric liquid crystal sandwiched therebetween.

    A process for preparation of an optical compensatory sheet is disclosed. The process comprises the steps in order of: coating a support with a photosensitive compound; exposing the photosensitive compound to beams of linearly polarized light emitted from a semiconductor laser to form an orientation layer; coating the orientation layer with a liquid crystal composition containing polymerizable liquid crystal molecules; aligning the liquid crystal molecules to form an optically anisotropic layer; and then polymerizing the liquid crystal molecules to fix alignment.
