    Synthesis and structures of Octaaza NiII and CuII macrocyclic complexes containing biimidazole

    The reactions of bis-(ethylenediamine)MX2, M(en)(2)X-2, bis-(1,3-propylenediamine)MX2, M(1,3-DAP)(2)X-2, and bis-(2,2-dimethyl-1,3-propylenediamine)MX2, M(2,2-DM-1,3-DAP)(2)X-2 complexes, [M = Cu-II or Ni-II and X = Cl- or ClO4-], after adjusting the pH values to 5, with 1,1-diacetyl-2,2'-biimidazole (Ac(2)BiIm) afforded octaazamacrocyclic Cu-II complexes (1-6) and Ni-II complexes (7-12). The solid complexes were characterized by elemental analysis, molar conductivities, IR, UV-vis, EPR, NMR and atomic absorption spectra, back titration, TGA and DTA. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science Ltd.

  • Copper(II) complexes with different diamines as inhibitors of bacterial quorum sensing activity

    Three copper(II) complexes, trans-[Cu(1,3-pd)2Cl2]?H2O (Cu1; 1,3-pd is 1,3-propanediamine), trans-[Cu(2,2-diMe-1,3-pd)2Cl2] (Cu2; 2,2-diMe- -1,3-pd is 2,2-dimethyl-1,3-propanediamine) and trans-[Cu(1,3-pnd)2Cl2]?H2O (Cu3; 1,3-pnd is (?)-1,3-pentanediamine), were synthesized and structurally characterized by elemental microanalyses, IR, electronic absorption and reflectance spectroscopy and molar conductivity measurements. The antimicrobial efficiency of the complexes against four clinically relevant microorganisms and their antiproliferative effect on the normal human lung fibroblast cell line MRC-5 were evaluated. Since in many bacteria, pathogenicity is regulated by an intercellular communication process called quorum sensing (QS), the effect of the copper(II) complexes Cu1?3 on bacterial QS was examined. The obtained results showed that these complexes inhibited violacein production in Chromobacterium violaceum CV026, indicating their anti-QS activity via the homoserine lactone (HSL) pathway. Two biosensor strains were used to determine which pathway, C4-HSL (N-butanoylhomoserine lactone) or 3OC12-HSL (N-(3-oxododecanoyl)homoserine lactone), was affected by the copper(II) complexes. The biological activities of the copper(II) complexes were compared with those for the nickel(II) complexes of the general formula trans- -[Ni(L)2(H2O)2]Cl2 (L = 1,3-pd, 2,2-diMe-1,3-pd and 1,3-pnd).

    Reaction of M('Bu)(3) (M = Al. Ga) with 2,2-dimethyl-1,3-propanediamine (dmpa-H-4) yields the thermally stable Lewis acid-base complexes ('Bu)(3)M(dmpa-H-4), M = Al (1) and Ga (2), respectively. The reaction of 2 with Ga('Bu)(3) yields the formation of [('Bu)(3)Ga](2)(dmpa-H-4) (3). In contrast, reaction of dmpa-H-4 with AlMe3 yields the tri-aluminum compounds [Al3Me5(dmpa-H-2)(2)] (4). Reaction of dmpa-H-4 With CuCl2 in MeOH-THF yields the neutral complex, [Cu(dmpa-H-4)(2)Cl-2] (5), While the reaction in the presence of NaBPh4 and MeCN yields the ionic complex [Cu(dmpa)(2)(MeCN)(2)][BPh4](2) (6). Compound 6 may also be formed directly from compound 5. The molecular structures of compounds 2-6 have been determined by X-ray crystallography. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
