    In this paper we present a series of novel compounds, bis(4-(4-alkylphenyl)azophenyl) 2-nitroisophtalates, which exhibit nematic and banana-type liquid-crystalline phases. The alkyl chain length varies from 1 to 18 carbons. The first ten members of this series exhibit nematic phase. The last eleven compounds exhibit banana-type liquid crystalline phases. The propyl and pentyl derivatives have extra second type of banana mesophase.

  • Photo-crosslinkable liquid-crystalline azo-polymer for surface relief gratings and persistent fixation

    Highly efficient migration has been observed for soft liquid-crystalline azobenzene-containing polymer films to form surface relief gratings (SRGs). The efficient migration is probably driven by the interfacial instability at boundaries between the smectic liquid-crystalline phase and photo-induced isotropic one. However, this migration system suffers from long-term and heat stability. This work proposes a new post-fixation method by utilizing the [2 + 2] photo-dimerization reaction of a cinnamoyl unit introduced into the polymer. The polymer synthesis, the properties of SRG formation, and drastic improvement of the stability towards heating and solvent exposure are described.

    A compound and a polymer which can each form a photo-alignment film having excellent ability of controlling alignment, a photo-alignment film obtained using the polymer and an optically anisotropic body and a liquid crystal display element each having the photo-alignment film are provided. A compound represented by the general formula (1). In the formula, P represents a polymerizable group, Z and Z 1 represent divalent linking groups, A and A 1 represent divalent cyclic groups, and X 1 to X 5 each independently represent a hydrogen atom, a fluorine atom, a chlorine atom, a hydroxy group, a nitro group, a cyano group or an alkyl group having 1 to 40 carbon atoms which may have a substituent, provided that X 1 , X 2 , X 4 and X 5 are not simultaneously hydrogen atoms.

  • Hierarchical organisation in shape-amphiphilic liquid crystals

    Shape-amphiphilic liquid crystals offer a route towards complex assemblies at the difficult 10 nanometer length scale. We present the preparation and mesomorphic characterisation of three novel shape amphiphiles based on azobenzenes. Their mesophases range from a simple nematic to complex lamellar phases of alternating layers of discotic and calamitic mesogens. In all smectic phases, the discotic and calamitic moieties are nanophase separated. As the different sub-layers start to tilt and/or display in-layer order independently, the mesophase assignment becomes more complex. Using temperature dependent X-ray diffraction we studied their characteristics.

    A series of novel terminal trimethylsilylacetylene benzoate derivatives with various linking groups were synthesized using Friedel-Craft's O-acylation reaction. The chemical structures of the novel 4-[2-(trimethylsilyl) ethynyl]benzoates were confirmed by standard spectroscopic techniques. The compounds were investigated for their liquid crystalline properties employing polarised optical microscopy and differential scanning calorimetry. The esters 5c - 5f, 5h and 5n possessing three phenyl rings exhibited liquid crystalline property of SmA/SmC phases with wide thermal range. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
