Preparation of anhydrous vanadium(II) sulfate compounds from aqueous solutions: the synthesis and characterization of [V(en)3]SO4, V(bpy)2SO4 and V(py)4SO4
摘要:
An easy way to prepare anhydrous vanadium(II) compounds by reaction of aqueous solutions of [V(H2O)(6)]SO4 with neutral amines is described as well as the X-ray crystal structure determinations of [V(en)(3)]SO4 . CH3OH (I) and V(bpy)(2)SO4 (II). The air-sensitive compound I crystallizes in the trigonal space group P (1) over bar 1c with a=9.009(3), c=9.570(2) Angstrom, V=672.7(3) Angstrom(3) and Z=2. II crystallizes in the monoclinic space group I2/a with a=11.957(2), b=12.071(2), c=14.614(1) Angstrom, beta=101.97(1)degrees, V=2063(1) Angstrom(3) and Z=4.

Reactions of aqueous vanadium(II) sulphate with pyridine-2-carboxylate (and other carboxylic acids) and 3-pyridinesulphonate (pySO3) salts have been investigated, as well as the reaction of the products with pyridine. Two of the products have been structurally characterized by X-ray crystallography. An aquo carboxylato compound, [V(Pic)2(H2O)2] . 2H2O (I) (Pic = anion of picolinic acid), crystallizes in the monoclinic space group P2(1)/n with a = 9.930(2), b = 5.169(1), c = 14.543(2) angstrom, beta = 90.35(2)-degrees, V = 746.1(2) angstrom3 and Z = 2. Extensive hydrogen bonding in the structure provides sufficient protection to the metal centre to make the crystals relatively stable in air. The pyridine adduct V(pySO3)2(py)4 (II) possesses a molecular structure and crystallizes in the monoclinic space group C2/c with a = 17.033(4), b = 11.218(4), c = 17.396(4) angstrom, beta = 110.05(2)-degrees, V = 3122(2) angstrom3 and Z = 4. Both compounds exemplify the facile formation of bonds between vanadium(II) and nitrogen-containing ligands.
