  • Strontium nickel and barium nickel selenites: Synthesis and X-ray diffraction parameters

    A new strontium nickel selenite, Sr2Ni(SeO3)(3), was prepared and structurally characterized. The compound crystallizes in triclinic system (space group P (1) over bar, a = 7.2860(10) angstrom, b = 7.581(2) angstrom, c = 8.722(2) angstrom, alpha = 103.02(2)degrees, beta = 105.580(10)degrees, gamma = 95.260(10)degrees, Z = 2) and is isostructural to cobalt and copper analogues. The structure of Sr2Ni( SeO3)(3) is a three-dimensional framework built of eight-vertex polyhedra [SrO8] and distorted octahedra [NiO6] sharing edges and vertices. The framework channels accommodate selenium atoms bonded to the framework oxygen atoms. The selenite groups SeO3 are pyramidal, which is indicative of high stereochemical activity of the Se(IV) lone pair. The possibility of replacement of some Ni atoms by Cu in Sr2Ni(SeO3)(3) was studied. The search for analogous barium phases did not reveal such compounds, but BaM(SeO3)(2) phases were found, where M = Co, Ni, or Cu. The unit cell parameters of the new selenite BaM(SeO3)(2) were determined: space group Pnma, a = 14.989(5) angstrom, b = 5.439(2) angstrom, c = 7.161(3) angstrom, Z = 4.

    The new selenite-chlorides with composition Sr-3(SeO3)(2)Cl-2 (I) and Sr2M(SeO3)(2)Cl-2 (M = Co, Ni (II and III)) were obtained. They crystallize in monoclinic system I: space group C2/m, a = 13.203(2)angstrom, b = 5.5355(8)angstrom, c = 6.6170(10)angstrom, beta = 95.89(1)degrees, Z= 2; II Space group P2(1)/n, a = 5.3400(10)angstrom, b = 6.4279(6)angstrom, c=12.322(1)angstrom, beta=92.44(1)degrees, Z=2; III: space group P2(1)/n, a=5.3254(11)angstrom, b = 6.4363(13)angstrom, c = 12.197(2), beta = 92.53(3)degrees, Z = 2. All three compounds are constructed in the same manner. Sr polyhedra form infinite layers, which are interconnected into a 3D framework by means of Sr polyhedra in the case of I or Co and Ni polyhedra in the case of II and III. Se atoms are situated inside the channels of the 3D framework. The topological analysis of ELF for I confirmed that the lone electron pairs of SeO3 groups are located inside these channels.
