Provided are: a liquid crystal composition which contains a polar compound having a polymerizable group, and which enables vertical alignment of liquid crystal molecules by the action of this compound (or polymer); and a liquid crystal display element which contains this composition. This composition satisfies at least one of such characteristics as a high upper limit temperature, low lower limit temperature, low viscosity, adequate optical anisotropy, large negative dielectric anisotropy, high resistivity, high stability with respect to ultraviolet light, and high stability with respect to heat; or this composition has an adequate balance among at least two of the above-mentioned characteristics. A nematic liquid crystal composition which contains, as a first additive, a polar compound and has a negative dielectric anisotropy. This composition may contain, as a first component, a specific liquid crystal compound that has a large negative dielectric anisotropy, as a second component, a specific liquid crystal compound that has a high upper limit temperature or a low viscosity, and as a second additive, a polymerizable compound. A liquid crystal display element which contains this composition.
