染料是指能使纤维等物料坚牢着色的有机物质。染料种类繁多,根据来源可分为天然染料和合成染料两大类。天然染料包括植物性、动物性和矿物性染料;合成染料则由煤焦油或石油加工产品经化学加工而成。按分子结构分类,常见的有偶氮染料、蒽醌染料、酞菁染料等;而根据应用方法,可分为酸性染料、碱性染料、硫化染料和活性染料等多种。

合成染料又称“人造染料”,主要由煤焦油或石油加工的分馏产品如苯、萘、蒽、咔唑等经化学加工而成。这类染料种类繁多,色彩丰富且耐洗耐晒,并可大量生产,因此当前几乎所有的染料都指代合成染料。合成染料在司法鉴定中也常作为物证检材之一。
颜料是一种彩色或无色颗粒状的有机或无机固体,在水、油或其他应用介质中不溶解但能均匀分散,且在整个分散过程中不受物理和化学影响,保持其固有的晶体结构。根据化学组成分为无机颜料与有机颜料;按照颜色可分为白色、红色、黄色等;按来源可分天然和合成两类;而按用途则区分着色颜料、体质颜料及功能颜料。
着色颜料赋予介质多种颜色,包括无机和有机颜料。体质颜料主要用于降低产品成本并改善涂料、塑料等产品的性能,早期称为填料,但现在更适宜称其为体质或增量颜料。合成品因其杂质少、粒子细且可进行人工合成和表面改性,在减少遮盖力颜料(如二氧化钛)用量的同时也能提升产品质量。
功能颜料赋予产品特定功能,例如示温颜料、防污颜料、发光颜料、防锈颜料及珠光颜料等。随着科技进步,各种高性能颜料将得到进一步发展并在涂料、印刷、橡胶、塑料、造纸、纤维、陶瓷等行业中广泛应用,使产品具备装饰性、不透明性、耐久性和特殊功能。
