IR, P-31 NMR and F-19 NMR spectroscopy was used to study triphenylphosphinimines with substituents at the nitrogen atom and their complexes with boron trifluoride. In the case of aryl or benzyl substituents, BF3 adds to the nitrogen atom, while the state of the phosphorus atom is close to phosphonium. An analogous structure of the intermediate complexes is proposed upon the catalysis of the imide-amide rearrangement by BF3. The introduction of acyl groups such as phosphoryl, thiophosphoryl, and methanesulfonyl groups to the nitrogen atom of the triphenylphosphinimine alters the site of attachment of BF3, which is found at the oxygen atoms of the P = 0 or SO2 groups or to the sulfur atom of the P = S group.

A new type of Atherton-Todd reaction for a convenient pseudohalogenation of phosphites has been developed. Direct azidation, cyanation, and thiocyanation of (RO)2P(O)H (R = Et, i-Bu, Ph) were accomplished readily with sodium pseudohalides in acetonitrile under mild modified Atherton-Todd conditions. The corresponding phosphorochloridates were demonstrated by GC/MS to be the intermediates. Pseudohalogenations of ethyl phenylphosphinate and diphenylphosphine oxide were also investigated.

Pseudohalogenation of phosphorochloridates by sodium pseudohalides with different phasetransfer catalysts and solvents was optimized. Dialkyl and diaryl phosphorazidates phosphorocyanidates, and phosphor(isothiocyanidate)s were prepared in good yields from phosphorochloridates under two kinds of mild phase‐transfercatalyzed conditions respectively.
