found to be a general dehydrodimerization catalyst for boron-boron linked polyhedral cagecompounds. The reactions of a variety of small cage systems were explored, and all coupling reactions were found to proceed at moderate temperatures, were highly selective, and gave excellent yields of linked-cage products. These techniques have been used to prepare a number of new coupled cage boron hydrides

New alkyl derivatives of the nido-dicarbapentaborane, 1,2-C(2)B(3)H(7), and arachno-carbapentaborane, 1-CB(4)H(10), have been identified as the main volatile carbaborane products in quenched gas-phase reactions of tetraborane(10), B(4)H(10), with alkyl-substituted ethynes RC[triple bond]CR' (R = Me, Et, (n)Pr or (t)Bu, R' = H; R = Me or Et, R' = Me). The gaseous mixtures were heated at 70 degrees C

Reaction between trimethylindium and tetraborane(10) at room temperature yields the volatile, viscous liquid dimethylindium octahydrotriborate, the first reported example of a volatile indium hydride; spectroscopic properties of the vapour indicate a molecular structure akin to that of Me2A1B3H8 although the crystal structure implies a more ionic formulation, [Me2In]+[B3H8]–, with the coordination at each indium centre being augmented via secondary intermolecular interactions with terminal hydrogen atoms.
Gas-phase reactions of tetraborane(10) with 1-en-3-ynes: syntheses of the parent tricarbahexaborane, nido-2,3,4-C3B3H7, and its derivatives

The gas-phase reaction at 70 °C between B4H10 and 2-methylbut-1-en-3-yne, H2CMeCCH, gives the new tricarbahexaborane derivatives 2–4 and the tetracarbahexaborane 5 as the major volatile products in an overall yield of 18%; reactions with H2CCHCCH and H2CCHCCMe lead to the first syntheses of the parent tricarbahexaborane nido-2,3,4-C3B3H7 1.
