PREPARATION OF TETRABORON SILICIDE, B<sub>4</sub>Si

From a search for high-temperature oxidation-resistant materials, the development of tetraboronsilicide, B/sub 4/Si, is reported. This silicide of boron can be prepared in large quantities. Shapes fabricated from B/sub 4/Si by powder metallurgical techniques have withstood oxidation in air for over 100 hours at 137O deg C. Thermal shock resistance was displayed when no cracks were observed upon removal
