  A process for the preparation of gabapentin of formula (I) 1 which comprises: a) reduction of (1-nitromethyl-cyclohexyl)acetonitrile of formula (II) 2 to give 3-imino-2-aza-spiro[4.5]decan-2-ol of formula (III) 3 b) transformation of compound (III), by alkali treatment, into 2-hydroxy-2-aza-spiro[4.5]decan-3-one of formula (IV) 4 c) reduction of compound (IV) to give 2-aza-spiro[4.5]decan-3-one of 5 d) hydrolysis of compound (V) to gabapentin.

  [EN] A method of producing gabapentin (l-amino-methyl)-l-cyclohexaneacetic acid) from its hydrochloric or hydrobromic salt or mixtures thereof in an anhydrous medium, the method consisting of: - dissolving gabapentin hydrochloride or hydrobromide in a non-aqueous organic solvent in which gabapentin is insoluble to obtain a solution of gabapentin hydrochloride or hydrobromide; - adding an epoxide to the solution to remove the chloride or bromide ions thereby precipitating gabapentin out of the solution as a white solid; - recovering the white solid by filtration; and - drying the white solid.
  [FR] Procédé de production de gabapentine ou acide 1-(amino-méthyl)-1-cyclohexane acétique à partir de son sel chlorhydrique ou bromhydrique ou de mélange de ces sels dans un milieu anhydre. Ledit procédé consiste à dissoudre le chlorhydrate ou le bromhydrate de gabapentine dans un solvant organique non aqueux dans lequel la gabapentine est insoluble pour obtenir une solution de chlorhydrate ou de bromhydrate de gabapentine, à ajouter un époxyde à la solution pour éliminer les ions de chlorure ou de bromure, ce qui précipite la gabapentine de la solution sous forme de matière solide blanche, et à récupérer cette matière solide blanche par filtration, puis à la faire sécher.
