  A strain of Cochliobolus spicifer (D-5) isolated from diseased wheat produced several phytotoxins. A new minor phytotoxin with an azaphilone chromophore was isolated, characterized and named spiciferinone. A bioassay using protoplasts from wheat cotyledons demonstrated that spiciferinone was slightly more toxic than spiciferone A, a major phytotoxin of this fungus.
