    The system Ce-Sn has been reinvestigated in the temperature range from 400 to 800-degrees-C using X-ray powder diffraction techniques. From a characterization of its crystal structures the existence of nine binary compounds has been confirmed.Magnetic investigation of the binary cerium stannides in the temperature range from 4.2 to 600 K revealed a systematic tendency for ferromagnetic ordering of the cerium-rich compounds up to a ratio Ce:Sn almost-equal-to 1, followed by antiferromagnetism up to a ratio of Ce:Sn almost-equal-to 0.4, towards interconfigurational fluctuation in the compound richest in tin, CeSn3. Candidates for heavy fermion behaviour found in the transition regions, besides CeSn3, are alpha-Ce5Sn3 and Ce11Sn10.

    Magnetic measurements and neutron diffraction studies have been performed on Ce5Sn3 (tetragonal alpha-phase) and Ce5Sn4 (orthorhombic). For both compounds, additional magnetic lines appear on the neutron spectra as the temperature is lowered below 18 K in Ce5Sn3 and below 8 K in Ce5Sn4. The corresponding propagation vectors are k = (0, 0, k(z)) with k(z) = 0.276 for Ce5Sn3, and k = 0 for Ce5Sn4. The group theory analysis based on the crystal symmetries and the Landau theory of phase transitions allowed the determination of the possible couplings between the magnetic moments within each cerium crystallographic site (16 and 4 atoms for Ce5Sn3, 8, 8 and 4 atoms for Ce5Sn4). Ce5Sn3 presents a sine-wave modulated structure with moments lying in the basal plane of the tetragonal structure with a configuration favouring the principal symmetry axes [100] and [010]. Ce5Sn4 is a noncollinear ferromagnet, the ferromagnetic component being along [100].
