Heat capacity anomalies due to phasetransition and glass transition were found at 209.16 ± 0.10 K and around 41 K. Dielectric relaxation was observed between 58 and 130 K. An anomalous effect, probably related to the orientational dynamics of the NO−2 ion, was found in laser-Raman spectra of the bending vibration of the anion.

The preparations are reported of compounds containing M(NO2)42– anions, where M = MnII, CoII, CuII, or ZnII. The infrared spectra (2000–200 cm.–1) of these and the compounds K2Cd(NO2)4 and K2Hg(NO2)4 are reported, as are the electronic spectra and magnetic moments of the manganese, cobalt, and copper compounds. temperature region between 13 and 350 K. The phasetransitions of CsNO 2 and TlNO 2 were found at (209.16 ± 0.10)K and (282.4 ± 0.1)K. The enthalpy and entropy of the phasetransition were (3.45 ± 0.20) kJ mol −1 and (17.2 ± 1.0) JK −1 mol −1 for the former, and (6.44 ± 0.31) kJ mol −1 and (23.8 ± 1.1) JK −1 mol −1 for the latter. The glass transitions were found around 42 K in CsNO 2 and around 60
