Abstract Cerium(IV) oxide, -sulphate, -perchlorate, -acetate, -nitrate, -chloride are solvolysed in chlorosulphuric acid to form the Ce(SO3Cl)4 species and behave as non-electrolytes in it. Thorium(IV) oxide, -nitrate, -acetate, -chloride are solvolysed in this medium to form the species H2[Th(SO3Cl)6] which behaves as a weak acid.
