    Described herein polymer precursor compounds (aka polymer building blocks) of derived from biobased compounds, and specifically biobased mevalonolactone and its related derivatives. Through oxidation these biobased precursors can be reacted to yield building blocks for (unsaturated-) polyesters, polyester polyols and polyamides, as well as precursors for glycidyl esters and omega-alkenyl esters. Through reduction, these biobased precursors can be reacted to yield building blocks for (unsaturated-) polyesters, polyester polyols, polycarbonates, as well as precursors for glycidyl ethers and omega-alkenyl ethers. Through nucleophilic ring opening and/or amidation, these biobased precursors can be reacted to yield building blocks for polyester polyols, chain-extender for polyurethanes, or polyester-amides.

    A β-modified phosphoric acid compound precursor having a partial structure represented by where A 1 represents —SR 1 , —S—S—R 1 , —SeR 1 , or —X, where X is a halogen selected from fluorine, chlorine, bromine, and iodine; R 1 represents hydrogen, an alkyl group having 1 to 20 carbon atoms, or the like; L 1 represents hydrogen, an alkyl group having 1 to 20 carbon atoms, or the like; L 2 represents an alkyl group having 1 to 20 carbon atoms, or the like; L 1 and L 2 may be linked to each other to form a 4 to 6-membered ring structure; L 1 and L 2 may each have a substituent; and the symbol * represents a bond to be bonded to a phosphate group by phosphorylation. Further, provided are a reaction inhibitor and a medicine, each of which includes the β-modified phosphoric acid compound precursor.

    Methods for synthesizing isopentenyl pyrophosphate are provided. A first method comprises introducing into a host microorganism a plurality of heterologous nucleic acid sequences, each coding for a different enzyme in the mevalonate pathway for producing isopentenyl pyrophosphate. A related method comprises introducing into a host microorganism an intermediate in the mevalonate pathway and at least one heterologous nucleic acid sequence, each sequence coding for an enzyme in the mevalonate pathway necessary for converting the intermediate into isopentenyl pyrophosphate. The invention also provides nucleic acid sequences, enzymes, expression vectors, and transformed host cells for carrying out the methods.
