The unstable molecule fluoro(sulphido)boron, FBS, has been detected by microwave spectroscopy in the gaseous products of the high-temperature reaction between F2S2 vapour and crystalline boron chips at 1100 °C. Accurate spectroscopic, geometric, quadrupole and dipole moment data have been derived: rI(F—B)= 1.284(3)Å, rs(BS)= 1.606(3)Å and µ= 1.086(5) D.
