    Magnetic properties of CeGe2−xGax alloys

    CeGeGa, which has the alpha-ThSi(2) type structure, has been reported to be a dense Kondo ferromagnet with a Curie temperature of 5.5 K. In the present work we have studied the effect of varying Ge/Ga concentration on the magnetic behavior of Ce ions in the alloy system CeGe(2-x)Ga(x). We find that isostructural alloys are formed for 0.7 less than or equal to x less than or equal to 1.3. The off-stoichiometric alloys also order magnetically. Magnetisation data show that CeGe(1.3)Ga(0.7) is ferromagnetic like CeGeGa but CeGe(0.7)Ga(1.3) orders anti-ferromagnetically. A fairly large temperature independent CIT exceeding 50 mJ/(mol K(2)) in the paramagnetic region is observed in the off-stoichiometric alloys indicating the presence of Kondo interaction as in CeGeGa.

    Correlation between the Kondo temperature and the photoemission spectral function in theCeSix(1.6≤x≤2) system

    In this paper, we study the evolution of the photoemission 4f-electron spectral density as a function of concentration in the CeSi(x) (1.6 less-than-or-equal-to x less-than-or-equal-to 2) system. The physical properties are strongly composition dependent around x = 2 reflecting large variations of the Kondo temperature with Si vacancies. Then this system represents an ideal case for photoemission investigations since it is possible to tune the Kondo temperature without significant changes of the non-f-electron density of states. Our spectroscopic measurements show a correlation between the Kondo temperature and the 4f intensity near the Fermi level as expected in the framework of the single-impurity Anderson model.

    The interaction of the components in the Ce-Pd-Ge system at 600 degrees C was investigated over the whole concentration range by X-ray powder and monocrystal diffraction, metallography, and X-ray microprobe analysis. The formation of the previously reported phases, CePdGe and CePd2Ge2, was confirmed and 15 new ternary compounds were observed. The crystal structures of the compounds Ce2PdCe6, Ce(Pd,Ge)(2), Ce3Pd20Ge6, CePd2Ge, Ce7Pd4Ge2 and CePd5Ge3 were determined. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science S.A.

    A series of lanthanide penta-germanides LnGe(5) (Ln = Ce, Pr, Nd and Sm) has been prepared by high-pressure (5-13 GPa) and high-temperature (500-1200 degrees C) reaction. CeGe5 crystallizes in an orthorhombic unit cell (S.G. Immm (71)) with a = 4.000(5)angstrom, b = 6.192(5)angstrom, c = 9.86(1)angstrom, and V = 244.1(5) angstrom(3). The new germanides are isotypic with LaGe5 Consisting of a Ge covalent network with tunnels where guest ions Ln(3+) are situated. The network is composed of sublayers; with edge-sharing Ge six-membered rings with only boat conformation. The sublayers are connected by rare eight-coordinated Ge atoms. The cell volume of the compounds systematically decreases from La to Sm compounds, except for CeGe5. owing to the lanthanide contraction. The lattice constants of CeGe5 are smaller than those of the Pr compound because it contains Ce4+ ions. CeGe5 is paramagnetic above 2 K. but does not obey the Curie-Weiss law. PrGe5 and NdGe5 are Curie-Weiss type paramagnets with Weiss temperatures of -3.3 and -18.4 K. SmGe5 shows an antiferromagnetic transition at 10.4 K. (C) 2009 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.
