A polyester resin composition is disclosed, comprising poly(trimethylene terephthalate) in a proportion of 90 wt% or more, wherein the resin composition has an intrinsic viscosity of from 0.4 to 2 and contains a phosphorus compound corresponding to from 10 to 250 ppm in terms of the amount of phosphorus element, a cyclic dimer in an amount of not exceeding 3 wt% and a bis(3-hydroxypropyl)ether in an amount of 2 wt% or less.
This polyester resin composition has excellent spinning stability and high melt stability and is used for the production of a poly(trimethylene terephthalate)-based fiber having excellent whiteness and high tenacity.

There are disclosed polyester fibers that are composed of at least 90% by weight of poly(trimethylene terephthalate) and have a limiting viscosity of 0.4-2, being characterized by containing a phosphorus compound at 10-250 ppm in terms of weight of elemental phosphorus, containing no more than 3 wt% of cyclic dimers, containing no more than 2 wt% of bis(3-hydroxypropyl) ether copolymerized with the poly(trimethylene terephthalate), and having a birefringence of 0.03 or greater.
The polyester fibers are poly(trimethylene terephthalate)-based fibers with excellent whiteness and tenacity, which are obtained by melt spinning of poly(trimethylene terephthalate) resin composition with improved whiteness, melt stability and spinning stability. The polyester fibers of the invention have satisfactory processability and can be mixed with stretch fibers and the like to provide fabrics having functions that cannot be obtained with commonly used polyester fibers and nylon fibers, for various types of clothing products and the like.
A polyester resin composition containing, as a resin component, a polyester with its main component formed from a polytrimethylene terephthalate and having an intrinsic viscosity of 0.4 to 2, which satisfies the following conditions (1) to (3):
(1) the polyester resin composition is composed of a polyester resin component comprising 90% by weight or more of a polytrimethylene terephthalate;
(2) the polyester resin composition contains 0.01 to 3% by weight of titanium oxide having an average particle size from 0.01 to 2 µm; and
(3) the polyester resin composition contains 25 or less/mg of the resin of agglomerates of titanium oxide particles which agglomerates have a lengthwise size exceeding 5 µm.
A polytrimethylene terephthalate-based polyester fiber, having a low frictional coefficient, excellent in wear resistance, and showing a suitable luster and a delustered effect, can be stably spun and drawn by applying a melt spinning method to the polyester resin composition. In addition, the resin composition is prepared by forming a 1,3-propanediol ester of terephthalic acid and/or its oligomer in the presence of a fine dispersion of titanium oxide in which the dispersion the agglomerates is controlled and subjecting the ester and/or its oligomer to a polycondensation reaction.
