Simultaneous transformation of a polynuclear complex and nitroxide in the reaction of the {Co6(O)2Piv10} cluster with 2,4,4,5,5-pentamethyl-4,5-dihydro-1H-imidazolyl-(3-oxide)-1-oxyl

                                    The reaction of [Co-6(O)(2)Piv(10)Thf(3)H(2)O] center dot 1.5Thf, where Piv = (CH3)(3)CCO2- and Thf = tetrahydrofuran, with nitroxides 2,4,4,5,5-pentamethyl-4,5-dihydro- 1H-imidazole-3 -oxide-1-oxyl (NIT-Me) and/or 2,4,4,5,5-pentamethyl-4,5-dihydro-1H-imidazole-1-oxyl (Im-Me) leads to simultaneous transformation of both the polymetallic core and the nitroxides. New polynuclear complexes: [Co(9)Piv(12)(OH)(2)L-2(1)]center dot 0.5C(7)H(16), [Co(9)Piv(12)(OH)(2)L-2(1)]center dot C7H16, [Co(9)Piv(12)(OH)(2)L-2(1)] center dot 2C(7)H(16), [Co(8)Piv(8)(OH)(6)(HPiv)(4)(H2O)(2)L-2(4)], L-6[Co-6(O)(4)-Piv(9)(H2O)(2)]center dot 2HPiv, [Co(6)Piv(8)(HPiv)(2)L-2(5)], [Co(6)Piv(8)(HPiv)(2)L-2(5) center dot C(6)Piv(8)(HPiv)(2)L-2(5)][Co(10)Piv(14)(HPiv)(2)(L2L23)-L-2] center dot C7H16, and [C(10)Piv(14)(HPiv(14)(HPiv(2)L(2)(2)L(2)(3)] center dot C6H14 have been synthesized and characterized by X-ray crystallography; in these complexes, L-1-L-5 are modified molecules of the starting NIT-Me and/or Im-Me.(Graphics table)(c) 2006 Elsevier Ltd.
