The new cationic tantalum complexes [TaCp*Me{kappa(3)-N,O,O-(OCH2)(2)py}][MeB(C6F5)(3)] (2) and [TaCp*Me{kappa(3)-N,O,O-(OCH2)(2)py}][BF4] (3) have been synthesized by reaction of cis-[TaCp*Me-2{kappa(3)-N,O,O-(OCH2)(2)py}], Cp* = kappa(5)-C5Me5, with B(C6F5)(3) or H[BF4], respectively. The cationic derivatives 2 and 3 react with water to yield respectively [TaCp*Me{omicron(3)-N,O,O-(OCH2)(2)py}(H2O)][MeB(C6F5)(3)] (4) and [TaCp*FMe{kappa(3)-N,O,O-(OCH2)(2)py}] (5). The tantalum difluoride [TaCp*F-2{kappa(3)-N,O,O-(OCH2)(2)py}] (6) can be prepared by reaction of 3 with water. Compound 6 reacts with Me3SiOTf, rendering the triflate derivative [TaCp*F{kappa(3)-N,O,O-(OCH2)(2)py}(OTf)] (7), which reacts with water to form the corresponding water-soluble adduct [TaCp*F{kappa(3)-N,O,O-(OCH2)(2)py}(H2O)]OTf (8). The molecular structures of complexes 6, 7, and 8 have been established by single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies.
