Sc(III), Zr(IV), Hf(IV), Th(IV), and U(VI) have been prepared. The mixed nitrate-bis-(2-ethylhexyl)-phosphates of Zr(IV), Hf(IV), Ce(IV), Ce(IV), and Th(IV) were also prepared. The infra-red absorptionspectra of all these compounds were obtained, and the antisymmetric POO− stretching vibrations were compared. The POO− stretching vibration frequencies of the bis-(2-ethylhexyl)-phosphates of Sc(III)

Process for preparing 9 .alpha.-hydroxy-11 .beta.-nitro-oxysteroids having a aromatic ring A wherein an aromatic A-ring-containing 9, 11-unsubstituted steroid or corresponding 9,11-dehydrosteroid is oxidized with ceric ions in the presence of nitrate ions.
The infra-red spectra of a number of salts of di-n-butyl phosphate have been recorded and the results interpreted from a consideration of the interaction of the various groups in the di-n-butyl phosphate radical with the metal ion.

Abstract Cerium(IV) oxide, -sulphate, -perchlorate, -acetate, -nitrate, -chloride are solvolysed in chlorosulphuric acid to form the Ce(SO3Cl)4 species and behave as non-electrolytes in it. Thorium(IV) oxide, -nitrate, -acetate, -chloride are solvolysed in this medium to form the species H2[Th(SO3Cl)6] which behaves as a weak acid. Lanthanum(III) oxide, -sulphate, -acetate and chloride form the species
