We succeeded in observing the de Haas-van Alphen (dHvA) oscillation of YbAl3. The single crystals were grown by the self-flux method. The residual resistivity and residual resistivity ratio were 0.5 mu Omega cm and 60. respectively. Three fundamental dHvA branches were detected for the magnetic field along the [1 0 0] direction. Their cyclotron masses were in the range from 8.1 to 22m(0), reflecting a relatively large electronic specific heat coefficient gamma = 58 mJ/K-2 mol. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. The Seebeck coefficient, electrical resistivity and magnetic susceptibility of TmAl3 and TmPd3 are reported. TmAl3 melts peritectially and was prepared as a single phase sample for the first time. Like TmPd3 it is a 'normal' metal as indicated by both electrical resistivity and magnetic susceptibility measurements. The room temperature thermopower of TmAl3 is moderate (15 mu V/K) while that of TmPd3 falls within the expected range for typical metals (-5 mu V/K). Further properties are also reported for YbAl3, TmAl2 and TmPd. From the magnetic susceptibility data it can be concluded that thulium adopts the normal trivalent state in all these compounds.
