Silver and its compounds can be absorbed via inhalation, while silver compounds can also be absorbed orally and dermally. It distributes throughout the body in the blood, particularily to the liver. Insoluble silver salts are transformed into soluble silver sulfide albuminates, bind to amino or carboxyl groups in RNA, DNA, and proteins, or are reduced to metallic silver by ascorbic acid or catecholamines. Metallic silver is oxidized and may deposit in the tissues, causing arygria. Silver is eliminated primarily in the faeces. (L808)

Metallic silver is oxidized and may deposit in the tissues, causing arygria. The silver ion is known to inhibit glutathione peroxidase and NA+,K+-ATPase activity, disrupting selenium-catalyzed sulfhydryl oxidation-reduction reactions and intracellular ion concentrations, respectively. Silver nanoparticles are believed to disrupt the mitochondrial respiratory chain, causing oxidative stress, reduced ATP synthesis, and DNA damage. (L808, A243, A244, A245, A246)

Silver itself is not toxic to humans, but most silver salts are. In large doses, silver and compounds containing it can be absorbed into the circulatory system and become deposited in various body tissues, leading to argyria, which results in a blue-grayish pigmentation of the skin, eyes, and mucous membranes. Argyria is rare, and although, so far as known, this condition does not otherwise harm a person's health, it is disfiguring and usually permanent. Mild forms of argyria are sometimes mistaken for cyanosis. (L809)

Exposure to high levels of silver for a long period of time may result in a condition called arygria, a blue-gray discoloration of the skin and other body tissues. Argyria is a permanent effect but does not appear to be harmful to health. Exposure to high levels of silver in the air has resulted in breathing problems, lung and throat irritation, and stomach pains. Skin contact with silver can cause mild allergic reactions such as rash, swelling, and inflammation in some people. (L808)

    The pure rotational spectra of AgO107 and AgO109 were recorded in the 117–380 GHz spectral region using a dc-sputtering absorption cell. The Ag107(I=1/2) and Ag109(I=1/2) magnetic hyperfine parameters are interpreted in terms of plausible electronic configuration contributions to the X 2Πi state. It is shown that the determined unusual sign of the Λ-doubling and Fermi contact parameters implies that the X 2Πi state is dominated by a three open shell configuration. A comparison with isovalent CuO is made.

    An improved silver catalyst for the oxidation of ethylene with molecular oxygen is made by impregnating a support with a silver salt prepared by reacting a silver compound with a neo-acid, in a hydrocarbon solvent with the reaction completed under reflux conditions; drying and activating the resultant precatalyst by heating in air; thereafter impregnating the activated catalyst with an amount, 800 to 5000 wppm of alkali metal, preferably Cs, to deactivate the catalyst to form a catalyst precursor and heating the catalyst precursor at 450.degree.-700.degree. C. for 0.1 to 4.5 hours at a steady state in a substantially inert atmosphere to reactivate it.

    A supported silver catalyst for the oxidation of ethylene to ethylene oxide with molecular oxygen is made by impregnating a support with a hydrocarbon solution of a silver salt of a neo-acid having 7 or more carbon atoms, substantially free of water and said neo-acid. Preferably, the hydrocarbon solvent is toluene, xylene, ethyl benzene, cyclohexane, or cumene. The impregnated support is dried and the silver is activated under conditions chosen to provide the optimum selectivity to ethylene oxide. Thereafter, the activated silver catalyst may be impregnated with an alkali metal solution sufficient to increase selectivity of the silver catalyst above its alkali-free state. The amount of alkali metal on the finished catalyst is the optimum for the particular support selected and preferably will be about 1-6.times.10.sup.-3 gew/kg of catalyst. The catalyst may also include additional promoters, such as the alkaline earth metals, preferably barium.
