Rhabdophane-type hexagonal lanthanide orthophosphate, LnPO4·nH2O (Ln = La, Ce, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd and Tb, n = 0 to 0.6), and body-centered tetragonal ErPO4·nH2O nanowires/nanorods have been successfully synthesized in high yield (>95%) by simple microwave heating of an aqueous solution of Ln(III) nitrate and NH4H2PO4 in the pH range 1.8–2.2. The reaction was conducted in a simple domestic microwave oven. The structure, morphology, composition and physical properties of the as-prepared products have been characterized by powder X-ray diffraction, low resolution transmission electron microscopy, high resolution transmission electron microscopy, selected area electron diffraction, thermogravimetric analysis, differential scanning calorimetry, infrared spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and photoluminescence spectroscopy. The length and width of the resulting lanthanide orthophosphate nanowires/nanorods are in the range 70–2200 nm and 6–130 nm, respectively. A possible mechanism for the formation of LnPO4·nH2O nanowires/nanorods is briefly discussed.

EuPO4·H2O nanorods/nanoparticles with a rhabdophane-type hexagonal form have been successfully synthesized using microwave assisted co-precipitation. The effects of chemical composition and pH on the size, shape, morphology and luminescence properties have been investigated by powder X-ray diffraction, Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FESEM), and photoluminescence spectroscopy. The mean size of the nanorods is about 15–30 nm in diameter and 200–400 nm in length and the size of nanoparticles is 10–20 nm. A powdered sample of these EuPO4·H2O nanorods/nanoparticles emitted yellow-green light with narrow bands at 594, 619, 652, and 697 nm under UV-vis excitation. The surface effects of the built core–shell structure on the fluorescent properties, and the compatibility of the EuPO4·H2O nanomaterials with a biological system, have been studied to develop a new fluorescent label for biomedical imaging. The primary test results in using a EuPO4·H2O–Immunoglobulin G conjugate for recognizing the measles virus in a vaccine is presented.

It has been shown for the first time that the use of hydrogen peroxide allows precipitation of rare earth orthophosphates (La-Tb) from phosphoric acid solutions at temperatures below 100 degrees C. Either anhydrous or hydrated orthophosphates with monazite or rhabdophane structure, respectively, can be obtained depending on rare earth element position in lanthanide series and precipitation conditions (orthophosphoric acid and hydrogen peroxide concentration). Hydrated orthophosphates with rhabdophane structure can be prepared by precipitation with hydrogen peroxide for all studied rare earth elements.
