    Systematic explorations of new compounds in the La3+–V4+/V5+-iodate system led to three new lanthanum(III) vanadium iodates, namely, LaVO(IO3)5, LaV2O6(IO3), and LaVO2(IO3)4·H2O. LaVO(IO3)5 is isostructural with LaTiO(IO3)5 and its structure contains a 0D [VO(IO3)5]3− anionic unit composed of one VO6 octahedron linked to five IO3− groups. Such 0D anionic units are separated by La3+ ions. LaV2O6(IO3)

    Attributed to its noncentrosymmetric arrangement, ε-La(IO3)3 is second-harmonic-generation (SHG)-active and the powder SHG response is measured to be 11.1 × KH2PO4 at 1064 nm in the 26–50 μm particle size range. This work has enriched the structural diversity of iodates and would further promote the materialsexploration under a supercritical hydrothermal method.

  • Microwave Synthesis and Up-Conversion Properties of SHG-Active α-(La, Er)(IO<sub>3</sub>)<sub>3</sub> Nanocrystals

    Pure alpha-La(IO3)(3) and alpha-La0.85Er0.15(IO3)(3) nanocrystals were synthesized by a microwave-assisted hydrothermal method leading to a reaction yield of 87 +/- 4%. Electron microscopy and dynamic light scattering characterizations provide evidence for the formation of nanocrystals with an average size of 45 +/- 10 nm for alpha-La(IO3)(3) and 55 +/- 10 nm for alpha-La0.85Er0.15(IO3)(3). When dispersed in ethylene glycol, the nanocrystal suspensions exhibit second-harmonic generation under near-infrared excitations at 800 and 980 nm whereas additional photoluminescence by up-conversion is simultaneously observed in the case of a-La0.85Er0.15(IO3)(3) nanocrystals. Quantitative assessments of the second-harmonic generation efficiency from second-harmonic scattering experiments at 1064 nm result in relatively high (d) coefficients measured at 8.2 +/- 2.0 and 8.0 +/- 2.0 pm V-1 for alpha-La(IO3)(3) and alpha-La0.85Er0.15(IO3)(3), respectively. The relative intensity between second-harmonic generation and photoluminescence is discussed following the excitation wavelength.

    Four new metal iodates, beta-CS2 vertical bar O-4(11), Rb2I6O15(OH)(2)(H2O)-H-., La(IO3)(3), and NaYl(4)O(12), have been synthesized hydrothermally, and the structures were determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction techniques. All of the reported materials contain I5+ cations that are in asymmetric coordination environments attributable to their stereoactive lone pair. Second-order nonlinear optical measurements on noncentrosymmetric La(IO3)(3) and NaYI4O12, using 1064nm radiation, indicate that both materials have second-harmonic-generating properties with efficiencies of approximately 400 X SiO2. Converse piezoelectric measurements revealed d(33) values of 5 and 138 pm V-1 for La(IO3)(3) and NaYl(4)O(12), respectively. Infrared and Raman spectroscopy and thermogravimetric analyses are also presented for all of the reported materials. Crystal data: beta-Cs-2 vertical bar O-4(11), monoclinic, space group P2(1)vertical bar n (No. 14), with a = 12.7662(14) angstrom, b = 7.4598(8) angstrom, c = 14.4044(16) angstrom, beta = 106.993(2)degrees, V = 1311.9(2) angstrom(3), and Z= 4; Rb2I6O15(OH)(2)(H2O)-H-., triclinic, space group P (1) over bar (No. 2), with a = 7.0652(17) angstrom b = 7.5066(18) angstrom, c = 18.262(4) angstrom, alpha = 79.679(4)degrees, beta = 85.185(4)degrees, gamma = 70.684(4)degrees, V = 898.9(4) angstrom(3), and Z = 2; La(IO3)(3), monoclinic, space group Cc (No. 9), with a = 12.526(2) angstrom, b = 7.0939(g) angstrom, c = 27.823(4) angstrom, beta = 101.975(4)degrees, V = 2418.4(6) angstrom(3), and Z = 4; NaYl(4)O(12), monoclinic, space group Cc (No. 9), with a = 31.235(3) angstrom, b = 5.5679(5) angstrom, c = 12.5451(12) angstrom, beta = 91.120(3)degrees, V = 2181.3(4) angstrom(3), and Z = 4.
