    The combination of dilithium- 1,4-bis(trimethylsilyl)cyclooctatetraene Li-2(1,4-(Me3Si)(2)C8H6). with anhydrous yttrium or lutetium trichloride and potassium N-isopropyl-2-(isopropylamino)troponiminate K{('Pr)(2)ATT}. leads to the corresponding mono cyclooctatetraene complexes [{eta (8)-1,4-(Me3Si)(2)C8H6} Ln{('Pr)(2)ATI}(THF)] (Ln = Y (1a), Lu (1b)). The solid-state structure of 1a was established by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Using the same synthetic strategy, the chiral complex [{eta (8)-1,4-(Me3Si)(2)C8H6)Y {((S)-PhCHCH3)(2)ATI} (THF)] (2) can be obtained by using the enantiomerically pure ligand, potassium N-(S)-1-phenylethyl-2-((S)-1-phenylethylamino)troponiminate, K{(S)-PhCHCH3)(2)ATI. Furthermore, [(eta (8)-C8H8)Sm {('Pr)(2)ATI}-(THF)] (3) was obtained by the reaction of {(C8H8)SmI(THF)] and K{('Pr)(2)ATI). (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

    Addition of an excess hexamethylphosphoric triamide (abbr. HMPA) to a neutral complex SmI(eta(8)-C8H8)(thf) (1) (C8H8 = 1,3,5,7-cyclooctatetraene), which was prepared by a direct reaction of metallic samarium with C8H8 in the presence of iodine in THF, afforded a cationic samarium complex [Sm(eta(8)-C8H8)(hmpa)(3)]I (2). Complex 2 can also be prepared by a simple one-pot reaction of stoichiometric amounts of metallic samarium, cyclooctatetraene, and iodine in the presence of an excess HMPA at 50 degrees C. With a catalytic amount of iodine, ionic complexes of general formula [Ln(eta(8)-C8H8)(hmpa)(n)][Ln(eta(8)-C8H8)(2)][Ln = La and n = 4 (6); Ln = Sm and n = 3 (7)] were obtained by treating metallic lanthanum or samarium, respectively, with cyclooctatetraene in the presence of HMPA. The structure of the diamagnetic complex 6 as well as the paramagnetic complexes 2 and 7 was determined by H-1 NMR spectroscopy. Crystal structures of 2 and 7 were revealed by X-ray analyses, indicating that these complexes comprised of a cationic [Sm(eta(8)-C8H8)(hmpa)(3)](+) and an anionic part; for 2 and 7 being I- and [Sm(eta(8)-C8H8)(2)](-), respectively.
