Synthesis, Structures, and Solvent-Occlusion Properties of a Molecular Loop and a Molecular Square Using Tetracarbonyl- and Diphosphine-Ligated Diruthenium(I) as Building Blocks and Dicarboxylates as Linkers

The reaction of [Ru-3(CO)(12)] with malonic acid or oxalic acid, followed by the addition of PMe3, yielded {[Ru-2(CO)(4)(PMe3)(2)](mu-O2CCH2CO2)}(2) (1) and {[Ru-2(CO)(4)(PMe3)(2)](mu-O2CCO2)}(4) (2), respectively. The molecular structures of both 1 and 2 were determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction to reveal that 1 is a molecular loop, while 2 is the first example of molecular squares containing {Ru-2(CO)(4)(PR3)(2)} building blocks.
