    Abstract The lanthanide orthoborates, Ln BO 3 , Ln = Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Yb crystallise in a monoclinic structure with the magnetic Ln 3+ forming an edge-sharing triangular lattice. The triangles are scalene, however all deviations from the ideal equilateral geometry are less than 1.5%. The bulk magnetic properties are studied using magnetic susceptibility, specific heat and isothermal magnetisation

    The compounds β -RE(BO2)3 [RE = Nd (neodymium meta-borate), Sm (samarium meta-borate) and Gd (gadolinium meta-borate)] were synthesized under high-pressure and high-temperature conditions in a Walker-type multianvil apparatus at 3.5 GPa (Nd), 7.5 GPa (Sm, Gd) and 1050 °C. The crystal structures were determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction data collected at r. t. (Sm, Gd) and at−73°C (Nd), respectively. The structures are isotypic with the already known ambient-pressure phases β -RE(BO2)3 (RE = (Tb, Dy) and the high-pressure phases β -RE(BO2)3 (RE = Ho-Lu)

    The crystal structures and magnetic properties of borate compounds Sr6LnFe(BO3)6 (Ln = La, Pr, Nd, SmLu) were investigated.   • Synthesis of nanocrystalline REBO3 (RE=Y, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Ho) and YBO3:Eu using a borohydride-based solution precursor route

    A Solution precursor route has been used to synthesize a series of nanocrystalline rare-earth borates. Amorphous precursor powders are precipitated during an aqueous reaction between RE3+ and NaBH4, and the isolated powders can be annealed in air at 700 degrees C to form YBO3, NdBO3, SmBO3, EuBO3, GdBO3, and HoBO3. YBO3:Eu formed using this strategy shows red-orange emission properties that are similar to high-quality nanocrystals prepared by other methods. The materials have been characterized by FTIR spectroscopy, powder XRD, SEM, DSC, UV-Vis fluorimetry, and TEM with EDS and element mapping. (C) 2008 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.
