The tetranuclear acetylide compounds Cp*WOs3(CO)(11)(CCR) (R = Ph, Bu, CH(2)OMe), depending on the substituents of the acetylide ligand, undergo reversible C-C bond scission. and C-H activation to afford the carbido-alkylidyne cluster Cp*WOs3(CO)(10)-(mu(4)-C)(mu-CPh) and the carbido-vinylidene clusters Cp*WOs3(CO)(9)(mu(4)-C)(mu-H)(mu-CCHR') (R' = Pr, OMe), respectively.
