Of the four published osmium fluorine compounds in the oxidation state +7, OsO3F, OsO2F3, OsOF5, and OsF7, only one (OsOF5) is a real Os(VII) compound. OsO(3)F has obviously been OsO4. OsO2F3 in its two modifications is a mixed-valence Os(VI)/Os(VIII) compound, whereas a newcompound Os2O3F7 is a mixed-valence OsV/Os(VIII) compound. The molecular structures of OsO3F, OsO2F3, and OsO3F2 are calculated

the preparation of many transition metal and actinide oxidetetrafluorides by oxygen-fluorine exchange of their respective hexafluorides using boric oxides is described. This simple procedure affords the preparation of MoOF4, WOF4, ReOF4, OsOF4 and UOF4 in high yield while reaction of boric oxide with IrF6 and RuF6 leads to the preparation of lower fluorides of these elements. The preparation of oxide

Osmiumoxidetetrafluoride OsOF4 has been prepared in good yield by the reduction of OsOF5 on a hot tungsten filament and has been characterized by chemical analysis, molecular beam mass spectroscopy, and X-ray crystallography.
