    Abstract We present the study of an asymmetry of point-contact characteristics of the heterocontacts RECu 5 –Cu (RE=Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm and Yb). Point-contact spectroscopy, in the case of normal metals, gives direct information about the electron–quasiparticle interaction (EQI). We have determined the asymmetry and have explained its origin within model taking into account the thermopower effects.

  • Systematic composition dependence in YbCu5−xAux from dense Kondo to antiferromagnetic system through quantum critical point around x=0.2–0.4

    Temperature and magnetic field variations of the electric resistivitiy (rho) as well as temperature dependence of the magnetic susceptibility (chi) are reported for the YbCu5-chiAuchi system with the C15b-type structure. These results indicate a systematic composition dependence from dense Kondo to RKKY antiferromagnetic system via quantum critical point with x=0.2-0.4. The logarithmic temperature dependence of rho was observed in the middle temperature range for all the compositions, implying that the incoherent Kondo scattering is dominant in this T-region. With decreasing temperature, the p tends to saturate, makes a maximum, then decreases toward the Fermi liquid ground state due to the coherent dense Kondo effect (x<0.2), or toward the antiferromagnetic ground state due to the RKKY interaction (for x>0.4). The non-Fermi liquid behavior was observed around the quantum critical composition (x=0.2-0.4). (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
  • Preparation of cubic AuBe5-type YbCu5−Al (0≤x≤0.5) under high pressure and their Kondo behavior

    Cubic AuBe5-type YbCu5-xAlx (0 less than or equal to x less than or equal to 0.5) has been prepared for the first time under a pressure of 1.5 GPa and at 650 degrees C. Magnetic susceptibility measurements indicate that cubic YbCu5-xAlx exhibits Curie-Weiss behavior down to 4 K, except for YbCu5 that displays a maximum at 10 K due to Fermi liquid formation. The Yb ion in this system is found to be in a stable trivalent state (4f(13), J=7/2) with a localized moment close to 4.54 mu(B) of free Yb3+ ion. Contrary to the consistent magnetic behavior, the temperature dependence of electrical resistivities of YbCu5-xAlx displays a systematic transition from a typical Fermi liquid behaviour rho(T)proportional to T-2 (x less than or equal to 0.1) to a Kondo impurity behavior p(T)proportional to-log T (x greater than or equal to 0.3). The characteristic Kondo temperature T-K is largely lowered during this crossover. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science S.A.
