The substitution of Group VI metal carbonyls by t-butyl isonitrile or p-tolyl isonitrile using a benzene/50% aqueous sodium hydroxide two-phase system and a phase transfer catalyst at 20° is a convenient high yield synthetic route to the mono-substituted complexes, [M(CO)5(CNR)] (M = Cr, Mo, W).
