    N-Coordinated Tin(II) Trifluoromethanesulfonates and Their Reactions with Transition Metal Carbonyls

    The syntheses of the compounds [(LSnCl)-Sn-1][M-(CO)(5)(SnCl3)] (3, M = W; 4, M = Cr), [(LSnCl)-Sn-1]OTf (5), [(LSnCl)-Sn-1][W(CO)(5)(SnCl2OTf)] (6), [(LSnOTf)-Sn-1][OTf] (7), and [(LSn)-Sn-2(OTf)(2)] (8) with L-1 = {2,6-[(CH3)C=N(C6H3-2,6-Pr-i(2))(2)]C5H3N} (DIMPY) and L-2 = {2-[(CH3)C=N-(C6H3-2,6-Pr-i(2))]-6-(CH3O)}C5H3N) is reported. The compounds were characterized by elemental analyses, H-1, C-13, F-19, and Sn-119 NMR spectroscopy, electrospray ionization mass spectrometry, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction analyses (3 center dot 1.5C(7)H(8), 5 center dot CH2Cl2, 7 center dot C7H8, 8). For compounds 7 and 8, the experimental work is accompanied by density functional theory calculations.

    Lewis Base Mediated Autoionization of GeCl2and SnCl2

    Cationic and anionic species of heavier low-valent group 14 elements are intriguing targets in main group chemistry due to their synthetic potential and industrial applications. In the present study, we describe the synthesis of cationic (MCl+) and anionic (MCl3-) species of heavier low-valent group 14 elements of germanium(II) and tin(II) by using the substituted Schiff base 2,6-diacetylpyridinebis(2,6-diisopropylanil) as Lewis base (LB). Treatment of LB with 2 equiv of GeCl2 center dot dioxane and SnCl2 in toluene gives compounds [(LB)(GeCl)-Cl-II](+)[(GeCl3)-Cl-II](-) (1) and [(LB)(SnCl)-Cl-II](+)[(SnCl3)-Cl-II](-) (2), respectively, which possess each a low-valent cation and an anion. Compounds 1 and 2 are well characterized with various spectroscopic methods and single crystal X-ray structural analysis.

The tin(II) compounds L1SnCl (1, L1 = [2-(CH2NEt2)-4,6-(tBu)2C6H2]-) and [L2SnCl][SnCl3] (2, L2 = 2,6-[(CH3)C=N(C6H3-2,6-iPr2)2]C5H3N) show a rather different reactivity towards the ruthenium complex [(6-cymene)RuCl]2(-Cl)2. As a consequence, the neutral complex [Ru(6-cymene)(L1SnCl)Cl2] (4) and the ionic compound [L2SnCl][Ru(6-cymene)(SnCl3)2Cl]
