Rate coefficients are reported for the cleavage by halogens of tintransition-metal bonds in compoundscontaining two or more such bonds. Bond reactivity with iodine is in the order SnCo ≈ Sn-Fe > Sn-Mo ≈ Sn-W > Sn-Mn. Rates of halogenation of compoundscontaining three tintransition-metal bonds show that a subtle balance between steric and electronic effects determines bond reactivity.
germanium-manganese, tin-iron, and tin-tungsten bonds were unsuccessful. Surprisingly, thermal reactions of trimethyltrifluoromethyltin, a good source of difluorocarbene, with (CH3)3MMn(CO)5 led to the formation of CF3(CH3)2SnMn(CO)5 and (CH3)4M (M = Ge or Sn). This type of exchange of (alkyl-metal) groups by metal—metal bonded compounds has not been observed previously.
